Beware of Dogs Signs
This sign complements the wrought iron fence nicely, but it could be a lot more eyecatching. Make sure your sign stands out from its surroundings."

Cat brain size: 5 cm. Human brain size: 15 cm. And yet we're the ones who have to be told to watch out for the dog.

Beware Guard Dog Signs
This Roman mosaic found in the ruins of Pompeii dates back to the 2nd century BC. "Cave canem" – pronounced kah-way kah-nem – is Latin for "Beware of dog."
In comedies, when a bumbling protagonist has to break into someone’s house or junkyard, there’s always a Beware of Dog sign and a lazy mutt just waiting to be pacified with an offering of steak. In reality, these signs can help prevent intrusion – as well as costly liability if someone should wander onto your property unaware of Fido. Your pet pinscher or German shepherd might be perfectly friendly to you, but we’ve all run into one-person dogs from time to time, and you want to warn people of any potential danger.

The first anthropological evidence of humans and dogs living in partnership comes to us through the Bonn-Oberkassel paleolithic burial sites, where humans and dogs were routinely buried together. Since then, dogs have been buried near human settlements for as long as domesticated breeds have existed. It’s telling that ancient dogs were often buried near settlement openings – surely a sign that they have long been prized as companion guards.

Due to the intervening hundred and fifty centuries of selective breeding, dogs tend to bond closely with their owners, and while some are more likely to lick than to bite us to death, they’re still descendants of wolves. Human behavior bears plenty of markers of our past as a species, and so does dog behavior; so no dog should be underestimated if its territory is threatened – including smaller dogs.

Reports show that 4.7 million Americans are bitten by a dog every year, and dogs are the fifth most common cause of childhood injury in the U.S. It obviously doesn't do much good to explain to dogs that the postal worker will be stopping by at noon, or that children might have to enter the yard to retrieve an errant baseball, so it's a lot easier to warn passersby of the dog! The object of the game is to be highly visible – there's no situation where you want anyone to miss this sign – so bright colors, high contrast and careful placement are critical to making an impact.
